A leading provider of simulation and virtual training solutions to industries and governments, worldwide. The customer designs and develops 3D virtual applications and simulators that enable individuals to improve their skill sets in a practical, safe and cost-effective model. Its marine simulation range provides real life training scenarios to the civilian and marine military industries.

The Challenges:

  • Development of a custom designed platform to meet the exact needs of the customer
  • High graphics and processing capabilities to optimise the quality of simulation images
  • Units generated high amounts of heat due to the graphics and processor specifications, which needed to be contained and managed to negate the risk of overheating
  • The platform needed to be able to power the graphics cards and processor safely, continuously and reliably
  • Expansion capability to connect and run the specialist peripheral devices required by the customer
  • Fully satisfy the specification and strict budget requirements stipulated by the end-user

The Solution

  • Captec designed and developed a custom built rackmount computer in a 4U enclosure
  • Intel Core i7 processor and two AMD Radeon R9 380 4GB graphics cards for quality of imaging and processing
  • Engineered thermal management with both graphics cards strategically configured behind three front fans, allowing for sufficient cooling
  • 850 Watt crossfire-ready PSU to provide power to the two graphics cards and processor reliably, safely and for extended timeframes
  • Captec integrated ten USB ports to enable the customer to connect peripheral devices, meeting functionality requirements
  • Expert component knowledge achieves exact application requirements, while still adhering to the strict budget set out by the end-user
