Rack Integration: An Introduction (Part Two)

Rack Integration: An Introduction (Part Two)

This blog follows on from the first instalment of an interview with Jake MacWhirter, our Rack Integration Product Development Manager.

In this part, Jake takes us through some of the more intricate details of rack integration including logistics, component selection, certifications and highlights the full extent of Captec’s project management services and capabilities.

To optimise a rack for success, at what stage of integration should Captec be consulted?

Ideally, to give a project the best chance of success, we will work with a customer from the very beginning on a specification. This enables both parties to overcome any design issues and implementation concerns through collaboration. We then build the rack, validate requirements, performance and finally take care of logistical issues such as shipping and installation to certify that the finished product arrives where it needs to be, application ready and with no issues from transit.

How does Captec ensure the safe transportation of racks?

Each delivery is highly dependent on the intended function of the project. For example, if a customer requires a fully populated rack, we will deliver that on an air ride truck, equipping it with the necessary protection to deal with issues such as speed bumps and potholes. This provides the greatest possibility that the cabinet will arrive there without any complications from transit.

However, if the cabinet is being shipped unpopulated, with components and accessories packaged or boxed separately, it is safe to be transported via standard road means. Ultimately, what we strive to guarantee is that not only does the rack arrive with the customer, but that it is able to be installed at its end destination – this is where delivery logistics and site surveys become crucial in realising the exact requirements of a specification.

What is the importance of strong supply chain relations in delivering project longevity?

Our expertise and knowledge in component selection is integral to providing a customer with a solution that we are confident achieves the longevity they require. Racks are typically deployed in the field for between ten and 30 years, but during that period the technology will need to be refreshed to keep pace with industry developments.  We work with our suppliers and distribution channels to optimise availability, delivering these components not just today, but many years into the future.

What can Captec do for customers operating in industries where high levels of documentation or certification are required?

Where projects require high levels of documentation, we can do everything from beginning to end, starting with collating all the mean time between failures (MTBF) calculations and individual certifications directly from component manufacturers. We then bring those together as the subassemblies and assemblies, conduct the compliance documentation, and finally guide the project through validation as a whole.

Do Captec offer any post-build support?

Captec offer post-build support on a project-by-project basis, so depending on the customer’s requirements and the geographic location of the final install, we offer anything from sending engineers on-site to rectify issues, to scheduling, spare parts, field service requirements, and technology refreshes.
