The first of the Royal Navy's flagship Type 45 destroyers has just been launched with a ceremonial sendoff by the Queen. With the full fleet of T45s due to enter service by 2014. The T45 incorporates some of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced naval, weapons and communications systems and Captec is proud to have been selected for the supply of highly specialised industrial computer systems for the Platform Management Systems (PMS).

The PMS industrial computers are custom COTS based systems ruggedised for the demanding environment for command, management, control and surveillance for the ship's main engines, auxiliaries, and various other sub-systems such as fire detection.

Captec used its extensive engineering expertiese to integrate a suite of industrial computers capable of meeting the very demanding technical specifications of the applications. Including shock and vibration, high operating temperatures, and extremely stringent EMC, to prevent interference with other very sensitive electronic equipment. Fundamental to Captec's set of winning capabilities included extensive experience in obsolescence management. Naval deployment projects have development phases that can last many years, and in-service lifetimes measured in decades. Managing obsolescence of computing technology with lifecycles sometimes measured in months is a big challenge.
