More and more applications are calling for industrial computer based solutions that are capable of operating reliably in some of the most hostile of environments. Specialist industrial computer manufacturer, Captec, has partnered with US based Octagon for many years and is spearheading its ultra rugged computer technologies in these most extreme of environments.
Maritime legislation has substantially driven the proliferation of voyage data recorders (VDRs) into sea faring vessels. Initially in passenger ships but in greater quantities in cargo ships above specific tonnages and is likely to cascade down to smaller ships in time. VDRs are the aerospace equivalent of the “Black Box” recorder that captures all the critical data of a trip. Because of their critical nature they have to be highly reliable whilst operating a very hostile environment. These where the critical drivers for one of the world leading VDR manufacturer to select Captec to design and supply the marine computer for their VDR based on industrial pc technologies and protected against the hostilities of the operating environment.
Captec will be guest speakers at Microsoft Embedded 2010 UK Hub event taking place at the Microsoft’s offices in Thames Valley Park on 6th May 2010. As well as presenting on Digital Signage technologies, Captec will showcase a small range of its industrial computer solutions, to demonstrate Captec’s full range of capabilities. The Hub event is focused on showcasing the power of Windows 7 in both componentised embedded format as well as full scale FES (For Embedded Systems). Windows 7 is Microsoft’s latest flagship Operating System with significant advantages and opportunities for developers and integrators to leverage on. The event offers a strong educational content programme coupled with the powerful opportunity of face to face engagement with a selection of Microsoft software and hardware partners.
Captec are passionate about the future of the planet and are committed to protecting the environment as best we can. We believe that there is an ever growing and urgent need for responsible environmental management within all organisations. Captec is already seriously committed to this cause with the achievement of its ISO-14001 certification a few years ago, well ahead of the industry. But we take that much further by undertaking many green initiatives which touch every aspect of the business., We plan to communicate these during the course of the year in more news stories to follow this one. However, for this story we will discuss our recycling policy. In 2010 we at Captec have set ourselves the ambitious target of achieving a zero cost for disposal of waste and recycling from the manufacturing of our industrial computers.
Computer Simulation is becoming increasingly prevalent in the training of specialist roles. None more so than in flight simulation for the training of pilots. Captec’s capabilities to manage industrial pc technologies and the integration in complete 19” integrated racks is becoming increasingly a key differentiator. Technological advancements in CPU and Graphics performance are pushing the boundaries of graphics rendering, driven by the gaming industry, and increasingly leveraged by simulation applications. Harmonising such high end industrial pc technologies requires expert integration of specialists such as Captec.
The London Underground network is the largest in the world. With such a critical transport infrastructure the efficient movement of passengers through the underground is paramount to London’s success as a world leading capital city. Underpinning this efficiency, Captec industrial computers have been deployed to support the reliable operation of the Oyster card system which enables ticketless travel in multiple forms of transport across London.
The evolution of simulation has allowed the practice of dangerous, costly and challenging operations to be performed in a safe and cost effective training environment running on industrial computers. This is put into practice for operators of machinery which requires in-depth training to enable them to be proficient and highly skilled.
2009 presented its challenges, however Captec can claim to be one of the few businesses who defied the economic downturn and due to their successful growth have continued to recruit new employees during 2010. Roles are being added across the entire business at all levels to further strengthen and enhance Captec’s technical, operational and business capabilities to deliver the best value and most reliable Industrial Computer for the variety of applications in the market.
Captec, in collaboration with Microsoft and Intel, will be delivering
an information packed Webinar on the opportunities, challenges and
risks of adopting PC based COTS hardware and software technologies in
medical and analytical devices for the healthcare sector. COTS offers
tremendous cost down, speed to market and innovation opportunities but
requires intelligent and careful selection, introduction and
management, particularly of the associated risks.
Captec is delighted to have been awarded the prestigious ‘Innovation of the Year Award’ at the annual Business Excellence Awards sponsored by The News and Business Link.
Trains have played a vital role in the development of modern society
and opening up countries for commerce and industry to take shape.
As we look at more appropriate ways of providing cost effective, greener transport, the train is high up there on the list of contenders. From steam trains to today’s bullet trains, the
technology to move rolling stock ever faster is equally moving at a
relentless pace. But with it comes an integral need to ensure that the
trains will stay on the track.
Captec’s growth and expansion continues unabated in keeping with the grooming plans towards a planned IPO. Having doubled our industrial pc manufacturing space only 4 years ago with a move to our current Fareham facility, we ran out of space earlier than expected. A nice problem to have, but still a challenging one. By the addition of a mezzanine extension we managed to increase production space by over 7,000sqf taking the overall Fareham facility to over 25,000sqf.
We all know and love modern wireless communications which now includes everything from a mobile phone, camera, mp3 player and so many more bells and whistles, if only we could figure out how to use them all! But there is a lesser known technology, Packet Mobile Radio which is extensively used worldwide, particularly by emergency services of police, medical and fire services for their radio infrastructures.
Captec is delighted to have been short listed for the prestigious Innovation of the Year Award in the annual Business Excellence Awards sponsored by The News and Business Link.

Modern life has brought us many new experiences, like
parked cars on roads when traffic gets congested. Its not
doing our stress levels any good and it certainly isn’t doing
the planet much good either, with the amount of wasted
fossil fuel, carbon emissions and the associated pollution.
As mundane as a traditional industry like construction
materials manufacture may be, the underlying automation
that takes place in such plants is hard to imagine possible.
Our need to feel secure has never been as high as in recent times.
Events like 911 and those that have ensued since, remind us of just
how precarious the security balance can be, and how easily it can be
tipped. Our nation’s security services and resources, coupled with
those of our allies are continuously stretched and tested to the limits
with a single outcome in mind. For nothing to happen! For our lives
to continue uninterrupted by acts of terror.
We celebrate the accomplishment of one of our German customers with their award winning system. Specialists in designing and manufacturing food packaging machinery, their new generation of packaging centre machine was developed with an integral Captec control computer and custom HMI touchscreen display.
The first of the Royal Navy's flagship Type 45 destroyers has just been launched with a ceremonial sendoff by the Queen. With the full fleet of T45s due to enter service by 2014. The T45 incorporates some of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced naval, weapons and communications systems and Captec is proud to have been selected for the supply of highly specialised industrial computer systems for the Platform Management Systems (PMS).
Sub sea surveying is used extensively for many applications such as the laying of the thousands of miles of sub-sea communications cables that criss cross our oceans. The expensive and sophisticated instrumentation and analytical equipment needed for such surveying is normally rented for the duration of the project. Consequently, such equipment is regularly ferried from vessel to vessel all around the world.
Global warming and the multitude of consequences of
our carbon emissions has reached proportions which are
impossible to ignore. The evidence is overwhelming and the
effects, far reaching and devastating.
Captec are pleased to announce the launch of its North American headquarters, Captec Americas Inc., based in Canada’s prestigious Technology Triangle (CTT).
